Bleeding Problems According to Traditional Chinese Medicine
Bleeding problems, other than obvious bleeding from cuts or wounds, are not always well understood in Western medicine. Internal bleeding, be it chronic nose bleeds, excessive menstrual bleeding, or bleeding during pregnancy, are well understood, and often better treated with Chinese medicine.
There are two principle causes of chronic bleedind problems in TCM. The first are bleeding problems caused by fragile blood vessles because of Spleen Deficiency. Do not confuse this Spleen with your actual spleen. This is considered a deficiency problem and can be cured by strengthening the Spleen and thus strengthening the vessels.
The other principal cause of bleeding disorders is bleeding caused by excessive heat which causes the blood to escape the vessles. Once again, do not confuse the term heat with actual heat or fever. Instead, think of heat as hyperactivity or excess metabolic activity. To treat this kind of bleeding problem, we must use herbs that cool the blood.
There are many catagories of Chinese herbs. There are herbs that Build the Blood, and there are herbs that Move the Blood. And there are the herbs that Stop Bleeding.
When treating bleeding problems with herbs, we must take into account the cause of the bleeding, the location of the bleeding, and the constitution of the patient. It must be kept in mind that most herbs used to stop bleeding can have a stagnating effect when used long term.
Herbal Medicine
Herbs to stop bleeding from trauma
Yunnan Baiyao is preferred for trauma induced bleeding. This powder can be swallowed or applied topically. Its exact formula is secret, but it's main ingredient is SAN QI, notoginseng or pseudoginseng root. This powder was used by North Vietnamese soldiers to stem the bleeding of their gunshot wounds. Yunnan Baiyao is also used for chronic bleeding disorders.
Herbs and chronic bleeding problems
These conditions require diagnosis according to the Four Examinations.
Inflamatory bleeding caused by heat (Reckless Marauding of Blood) is treated with herbs like CE BAI YE, HUAI HUA MI, DA JI. These herbs can be combined with blood cooling substances, such as MU DAN PI, SHENG DI HUANG, AND CHI SHAO.
When Blood Heat is combined with, or caused by Yin Deficiency, the above can be combined with E JIAO, HAN LIAN CAO, OR SHU DI HUANG. When Spleen deficiency is the cause, herbs to tonify the Spleen are added to the formula.
Other herbs used to stop bleeding include: Human Hair (XUE YU TAN), Lotus Receptacle LIAN FANG, and pollen PU HUANG, but probably the most often used herb, which is useful for both traumatic bleeding, and deficiency caused bleeding disorders is Pseudognseng root SAN QI.
HERBAL MEDICINE USED TO STOP BLEEDING
Chronic bleeding problems are best diagnosed by a professional practitioner of Chinese medicine, who can diagnose and treat the cause of the problem. However, if there are no practitioners near you, Yunnan Bayao is will help stop bleeding, whether the bleeding is due to trauma, heat, or Spleen deficiency.
