Common Causes of Itching According to Traditional Chinese Medicine

Itching is considered a sign of Wind as it relates to the surface of the body.  Though many causes of itchiness are internal and may not be related to wind or surface conditions, most herbal formulas to relieve itch will contain herbs to dispell wind.

Differentiate the cause of the itch. Choose between these two.

DEFICIENCY
OF YIN OR BLOOD

The itch is likely caused by a DEFICIENCY if:
EXCESS
HEAT IN THE BLOOD
The Itch is likely caused by EXCESS if:

It is chronic and of long duration.

The intensity is mild to moderate

If it is accompanied by dry skin, a thin or weak rapid pulse, or other signs of yin or blood deficiency

Blood deficiency could be indicated by fatigue, pale tongue or conjunctiva, and possible menstrual or sleep related complaints.

Yin deficiency could be indicated by the presence of mild heat symptoms such as hot flashes, weak fever, slightly red tongue, dry skin, restlessness, and feeling tired and wired.

It's appearance is more suden

Intensity is moderate to severe.

If it is accompanied by a rash, fever, or other signs of illness.

This kind of itch is a reaction to toxins in the body.  It's the itch you'd get from the measles, hives, allergy, or as a reaction to drugs.
