Eight Treasures by Health Concerns
Note that this formula is not the original BA ZHEN WAN, known as Eight Treasures, or Women's Precious Pills. This version adds DA ZAO sour dates, GAN JIANG dried ginger, and JI XUE TENG milletia, making it 11 treasures in all.
The original formula consists of two sets of herbs, four blood tonics (called SI WU TANG), and four QI tonics (SI JUN ZI TANG). The overall effect of the original eight herb formula is to build and move QI and blood. Eight Treasures has become a staple for women of childbearing age, to support normal menses and normal fertility.
It's difficult to estimate exactly what the addition of these herbs do to the original Eight Treasures, but they are all quite safe and their inclusion makes sense in the following way:
DA ZAO is a foodlike herb that is both a blood and QI tonic, and is often included to heighten these effects. Some herbalists use it, like licorice and poria, to increase the potency (absorbability) of the formula.
Adding GAN JIANG (dried ginger) warms-up the formula, and may be valuable to many who feel cold as result of Blood and QI Deficiency. This includes cold hands and feet as well as cold in the center (whole body).
JI XUE TENG (millettia) is a Vitalizing Blood herb. All herbs in this group relieve pain by moving blood. JI XUE TENG is one of only a few of these that are safe to take during pregnancy. When using herbs to build blood, always include at least one herb to move (vitalize) the blood as well. Doing this, avoids the possibility of creating blood stagnation.
