ER ZHI WAN *

Two-Ultimate Formula, Two Solstice Formula

ER ZHI WAN was first published in the  Yifang Jijie (Collection of Medical Formulas) in 1682 A.D.

ER ZHI WAN is a two herb formula that is usually combined with other prescriptions. The name, ER ZHI WAN, is often translated as Two Solstices Pill, hearkening to a time when these herbs were routinely picked near the time of the solstice. Ligustrum is picked at the winter solstice, while eclipta is picked at the summer solstice before the weather cools..

The formula belongs to the Yin Nourishing School of TCM, which theorized that yin tends to become deficient, especially as we age. Formulas of this school Protect and Restore the YIN.

ER ZHI WAN is such a yin nourishing formula that is said to strengthen the lower back, knees, sinews, and bones. It tonifies the Kidney YIN, and blackens hair.

Bensky and Barolet, in Chinese Herbal Medicine Formulas and Strategiesnote that:

[ER ZHI WAN] is an elegant combination of two herbs. Ligustrum is a sweet, bitter, and cool herb that enriches the kidneys and nourishes the liver. Eclipta is a sweet, sour, and cold herb that nourishes the yin, benefits the essence, and cools the blood to stop bleeding. Together, they nourish the yin aspects of the liver and kidneys without being cloying.

In mentioning that the herbs are not cloying, they give reference to the heavy, sweet, and indigestible properties of SHU DI HUANG (rehmannia), the herb most commonly used to treat YIN deficiency.

They compare ER ZHI WAN to LIU WEI DI HUANG WAN (Rehmannia Six Formula), noting that ". . . although the formulas are . . .  similar in usage, [LIU WEI DI HUANG WAN ] is regarded as a slightly stronger formulation.  ER ZHI WAN is preferred when chronic bleeding is part of the presentation, and is considered by some to be superior in treating premature graying or loss of hair."

In Ten Lectures on the Use of Medicinals, Jiao Shude suggests adding mulberry fruit for debilitated health and chronic deficiency.  Further adding HE-SHOU-WU, SHENG DI HUANG, DU ZHONG, SHAN YAO, AND GO QI ZI to treat signs of premature graying, clouded or weakened vision, ear ringing, hearing loss, and loose teeth.

Though rehmannia 6 combination is better for nourishing YIN, ER ZHI WAN is better suited for long term use, and for when weak digestion makes it impossible to consume the rehmannia formula.
