It is said that, long ago, there was an old man named mister He.  One day while foraging for food, he became separated from his tribe and found himself lost in the forest. He remained lost in the wilderness for 5 years when he was finally found and reunited with his tribe were astonished when they saw him. His white hair had turned black. When they questioned the old man they learned that In order to sustain himself, he lived almost exclusively on the root of the common Matrimony vine, Polygoni Multiflori. Today, in China, this herb is called HE SHOU WU (old mister HE).  Botanically it's  known as Polygoni Multiflori Radix.  In the West, HE SHOU WU and has also been known as FoTi.

Doctors of Oriental Medicine use HE SHOU WU to Build Blood and JING.   It's known to benefit the hair, benefit those with premature hair loss, or greying, and for those who are aging excessively.

An herbal paradox, He Shou Wu is thought to be slightly stimulating and slightly sedating simultaneously. It supports the lower back and knees, and it's been known to enhance sex drive, increase sperm count, and support the reproductive health of both men and women, particularly in instances caused by aging.

The herb is also known to be a potent antioxidant, supporting the body’s ability to clear reactive free radicals.  It is believed that the Superoxide Dismutase (SOD capacity) of He Shou Wu may be responsible for its “anti-aging” and “longevity increasing” reputation.

Scientists have found several potential health benefits of this herb

The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine includes HE SHOU WU (FoTi) in a list of herbs that support healthy adrenal function. This herb can also be supportive of those with certain types of thyroid imbalances and reduce relapses of symptoms once thyroid treatment is completed.

HE SHOU WU and Cancer

HE SHOU WU may also be helpful to people with cancer, according to a study in the March 2012 issue of the "Journal of Dietary Supplements", HE SHOU WU was found to contain high concentrations of resveratrol, a substance thought to decrease cancer causing inflammation and promote cancer cell death, inhibiting uncontrolled cell growth. Resveratrol is also thought to increase the effectiveness of some anti-cancer drugs.
