Six Gentlemen / Health Concerns
This is the most commonly used variation of the classical formula Four Gentlemen. It is most often used for simultaneous Spleen Deficiency with phlegm in the Lungs or stomach. This condition is characterized by loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, bloating, a stifling sensation in the epigastrum. Sometimes there is coughing with noticeable amounts of clear, white, or frothy phlegm.
Six Gentlemen is actually a combination of Four Gentlemen with components of the well known Two-Cured decoction, ER CHEN TANG. The Health Concerns version replaces ginseng REN SHEN with codonopsis DANG SHEN. This substitution is both economical (ginseng is very expensive) and more tonifying to the Spleen (DANG SHEN is considered a better Spleen tonic than is REN SHEN). The Health Concerns version also adds Vladimiria MU XIANG, and amomiun SHA REN giving us a total of 8 Gentlemen despite calling itl 6 Gentlemen. These additions make the Health Concerns version of 6 Gentlemen more like Aplotaxis Amomium Pills (XIANG SHA LIU JUN ZI WAN) than the classical 6 Gentlemen which only adds CHEN PI and BAN XIA.
