Wen Dan Pian (Wan*)
aka Warm the Gallbladder, Rising Courage
Wen Dan Tang is used for phlegm heat causing disharmony between gallbladder and stomach. Disharmony between the gallbladder and stomach impairs flow, causing fluids to become viscous and transformed into "phlegm". As the Gallbladder is associated with courage in TCM, Gallbladder issues may cause fright, fear, and anxiety as well as nausea and vomiting.
Wen Dan Tang regulates Qi, warms the gallbladder, and harmonizes the stomach.
In a 6 week study in which Wen Dan Tang was used to treat generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and compared with treatment by Prozac. Of 34 patients treated with Wen Dan Tang, 12 were considered cured, and 15 exhibited marked improvement. This was comparable to the fluoxetine group. However, the patients in the Wen Dan Tang group developed no adverse reactions whereas numerous patients in the Prozac group showed a variety of side effects.
