Source Text: Discussion of Cold Damage. Pinyin source name: Shan Han Lun, Author: Zhang Zhong Jing (c.220) Later Han dynasty. This formula is named after the Northern directional spirit of Chinese folklore, one of four formulas named after directional spirits. Also known as xuan wu tang - Tortoise Decoction (the tortoise is the spirit of the Northern Sky), this formula is designed to pacify and control excess pathogenic water retention in the body by stimulating and returning fire to the ming men (gate of vitality / lower back - kidney area)

Zhen Wu Tang- Formula Presentation:

Since this formula warms the yang and promotes urination, patients needing Zhen wu Tang will tend to present with notable lethargy, aversion to cold and edema of the face or lower extremities, a pale swollen tongue often with a white or slippery coat and teeth marked edges, and a frail, forceless and submerged deep pulse. They fall into the identifiable pattern of Kidney yang deficiency or Spleen and Kidney Yang deficiency, with retention of pathogenic water. They may also present with urinary difficulty or frequent clear urination, abdominal pain, heavy sensation or pain of the four limbs, spontaneous watery diarrhea with undigested food, and cough.
